DSP Small Cap Fund
Originally launched as the DSP BlackRock Micro Cap Fund in 2007, it is a unique fund with a defined investment strategy and execution focus.
In its original investment objective (before the recategorisation), it clearly mentioned that it will NOT invest in the top 300 stocks by market capitalisation. That essentially ruled out 90% of the stocks that most other funds invest in. It looks for the less sought after, less studied and lesser known companies and businesses that have a potential to provide outsized returns.
The current investment objective of the fund reads:
The aim of the fund is to seek long-term capital appreciation by investing in a portfolio that is substantially constitutes of stocks of small cap companies.
The fund has, in the past, restricted investments. That may be important for a small cap fund, given the illiquidity and volatility they have to deal with. Frothy valuations make it more accentuated.
Notice the rolling returns profile of the fund. It is (and for that matter most small cap funds) are not meant for the weak hearted or the impatient. A 10 year time horizon is the minimum requirement for investing in such a fund.
